Learning Support

In the Learning Support Department we aim to make reasonable adjustments and take relevant and purposeful measures to provide for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Each pupil is encouraged to fulfil his potential. Our aim is that all pupils on the Code of Practice experience balanced, inclusive, tailored educational provision. Nurture class provision extends from years 8 to 12 and allows pupils with SEN to access the curriculum effectively and make meaningful and measurable progress.

Learning Support Assistant

Curriculum – GCSE

Access classes are also offered in years 11 and 12. This allows pupils to follow a specifically designed curriculum which gives them the best possible opportunity for success at GCSE. This support is wide ranging, within a small group setting with extra adult support in each group.

The subjects delivered in the Access classes at Key Stage 4 are:

  • Maths

  • English

  • Occupational Studies

  • ICT

  • Careers

  • XL

Pupils also benefit from a comprehensive Pastoral curriculum, Careers, RE and PE/Games.

Pupils are also provided with a variety of pastoral supports that ensure they fully experience and enjoy school life outside of the classroom. These include:

Skills

It is the aim of the Learning Support Department to ensure that we develop all the skills required to succeed at GCSE level and also to become successful lifelong learners. These skills include cross-curricular skills, thinking skills and personal capabilities, including problem-solving skills and critical thinking. We also aim to improve our pupils’ organisation, independence, resilience and self-confidence.
